Brenda Barrales Nominated for Wisconsin DECA State Office
After a 5- hour screening process held in Sun Prairie on Saturday, February 13th, Brenda Barrales, a Brown Deer High School sophomore was officially nominated for the position of Vice President Civic Consciousness for the 2010-2011 Wisconsin DECA year. The screening process took part after Brenda submitted a lengthy application packet and three letters of recommendations. Two student DECA members from Wisconsin are chosen at screening to run for each of the six executive board positions. Elections will take place the DECA State Career Development Conference in Lake Geneva on March 9th.
Sophomore and Junior DECA members have the option of running for the prestigious position of DECA executive board member. The six-member board is responsible for representing Wisconsin DECA to the 13,000 high school members across the state. They are trained by some of the best leadership development trainers in a week-long State Officer Workshop (SOW) to have poise, confidence, public speaking, negotiation skills, and professionalism. The training prepares them for their obligations of representing Wisconsin at several state and national conferences during the school year.
The Vice President of Civic Consciousness is directly responsible for identifying and implementing the development of community service programs throughout the 120-plus DECA chapters in the state of Wisconsin. Executive board members are also responsible for developing business partnerships for the WI DECA foundation, a separate entity developed to help financially assist DECA members in their travel to International Competition.
Barrales is currently preparing her platform for this position, which will be presented in several caucuses at the State Conference in March. If elected, Barrales will be only the third State Officer from Brown Deer in the history of the organization, following Ryan Schulman, who served as the VP of Civic Consciousness in 2007-2008 and Dan Becker, who served as the VP of Chapter Development in 2009-2010.
