Brown Deer Business Students to Compete at Multiple State Competitions
Brown Deer’s award-winning business department is sending students to three separate state business competitions in the next several weeks. This news coming after the students qualified for two more competitions this past week.
Ten marketing education students will represent BDHS at the Wisconsin DECA Career Development Conference, held March 9-11th in Lake Geneva after being selected for the team based on their performance at the District level competition in January. Junior Rob Davis, led the team with a 4th place series finish in his event, Business Services. DECA competition involves students taking two tests on business, marketing, and economics as well as performing in two case study role plays. Students compete at state hoping to place well enough to represent Wisconsin at the International conference which will be held in Louisville, Kentucky at the end of April. Other qualifiers at this competition include: Dan Becker, Sean Andryauskas, Brian Michalica, Geoff Gilles, Steven Wade, Brenda Barrales, Kelsey Wangler, Kelsey Greuel, and Shringalah Webb.
The five-member LifeSmarts team from Brown Deer has been selected as one of 9-teams from the state to compete in the Wisconsin LifeSmarts Championship which will take place on February 26th in Milwaukee. LifeSmarts, the Ultimate Consumer Challenge tests student’s knowledge in five areas including technology, consumer awareness, finance, health, and the environment. The team was selected based on their scores on the first-round Internet-based competition. The in-person competition is a fast-action-oriented competition utilizing buzzers and timers! The winning team moves forward to the National LifeSmarts Championship, which is held in Miami, Florida at the end of April. Members of this team include: Sean Andryauskas, Meredith Oates, Brian Michalica, Elyssa Mullings, and Dan Becker.
This past Saturday, several students qualified for the Wisconsin FBLA State Leadership Conference, which will be held April 12-13th in the Wisconsin Dells. Students placing in the top five in their respective events are chosen for this honor with the hopes of moving forward to the 2010 National Leadership Conference, which will be held in Nashville, Tennessee at the end of June. Top five finishers at the Regional conference were: Paolina Palmisano (1st place), Brenda Barrales (1st place), Kelsey Greuel (1st place), Dan Becker (3rd place), Elyssa Mullings (3rd place), and Amy Wisotzke (4th place).
On February 18th, two three-person teams from the business department will compete at the Junior Achievement Business Case Competition held at Briggs and Stratton. These teams will be competing for cash prizes, scholarships, as well as the opportunity to compete at the Wisconsin Junior Achievement Business Case Competition. Brown Deer’s competitors in this competition are: Erik Berbaum, Sean Andryauskas, Aaron Hopgood, Meredith Oates, Vicky Rivera, and Alayna Anthony.
All four teams are coached by business and marketing teacher Christine Slater, who has been with Brown Deer High School for the past four years. Slater is advisor to the Association of Business Students organization, which houses both the school’s FBLA and DECA chapters as well as running the Falcon’s Nest- which is the school’s bookstore.
