BD girls overpower game Shorewood squad, 73-38
For the 0-21 Shorewood girls basketball team, good moments have been few and far between this winter.
But the Greyhounds have improved.
Just listen to Brown Deer coach Mark Busalacchi after his Falcons didn't put Shorewood down until a 28-6 fourth quarter outburst led to a 73-38 victory Wednesday night.
"Oh they're so much better than they were the first time we played," he said. "They didn't get a basket in the first half that time. They deserved to be in this game, because they played harder and better than we did for about three quarters. We got away with just our athleticism for awhile."
The win improved Brown Deer to 8-14 as the Falcons closed their regular season. The two teams will meet at Brown Deer next Tuesday in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal.
The Falcons shot out to a 19-4 first quarter lead and carried a 33-13 halftime advantage.
But in the third quarter, the Greyhounds pushed back a little bit as a 6-0 run, all on free throws, helped cut the margin to 41-30 as Maggie Higgins and Jenny Vrobel had five points each and Margaret O'Brien six for the Greyhounds in a period where they outscored the Falcons, 19-12.
However, that was the high point for Shorewood as it had succeeded in gaining the Falcons attention. Brown Deer would hit its first five shots of the fourth quarter and eight of its first 10 (including two three-point plays by Monique Morris), as a 16-2 run finished any drama in the game.
"We finally turned it up a little bit," Busalacchi said. "This was too bad. We had been playing well recently, but I think we took a little step back in terms of our intensity. It's tournament time now and we have to turn it up."
Ariel Kinlow had 18 points for Brown Deer and she was helped out by Chelsea Stingley with 13, Morris with 12 and Mariah Weddle who added 11. A total of 10 Falcon players scored in the game. O'Brien had 11 and Audrey Peterson eight for Shorewood.
