Falcons sprint to hot start vs. Highlanders

Dec. 5, 2007

A veteran Brown Deer team jumped right into the new season last week.

The Falcons scored the first 16 points in their season opener against Homestead on Nov. 27 and held a 26-9 lead after the first quarter en route to an 85-71 triumph.

"Our experience came through there," coach Mike Novak said. "We have 10 seniors and five juniors, and five of the seniors - Derrick Washington, Kevin Wild, William Sherard, Jamal Anwar and Mike Purtell - have been on varsity since they were sophomores."

The Falcons followed up with victories of 66-63 over Cudahy on Nov. 30 and 65-51 over Brillion on Dec. 1 to start the year at 3-0.

Against Homestead, Brown Deer narrowly missed placing five in double figures, as Washington and Michael Farrington each tallied 19 points, Wild 16, Purtell 14 and Anwar nine. The Falcons also hit 16 of 18 from the line.

Homestead eventually steadied and played Brown Deer evenly over the last three periods, coming as close as eight points with five minutes left in the game, but the Falcons pulled away again.

Shelby Harris led Homestead with 15 points, while Alex Debbink and Casey Barnes each added 14.

"Brown Deer pressured us in the first quarter and we didn't handle it well," Homestead coach Ray Curry said. "We made eight turnovers and those led to layups for them."

The Highlanders, who welcome Nicolet in the North Shore Conference opener on Friday, Dec. 7, are also still in the process of getting into basketball shape, as seven players were on the WIAA Division 1 runner-up football team.

"They still have their football legs," Curry said. "(Basketball requires) different conditioning."

Homestead's scheduled game against Grafton on Nov. 30 was postponed following an auto accident that killed two students last week. That game had not been reset as of press time.

Brown Deer's closest call of the week was against Cudahy, as the Falcons were down by two points with about one minute left. Purtell converted a three-point play on a driving shot for the lead, then Washington drilled a 3-pointer off a set play with 10 seconds left to make it 64-60.

Cudahy answered with a 3-pointer, but Washington hit a pair of free throws for a 66-63 advantage and the Packers managed only a long 3-point try at the buzzer.

Wild scored 16 points, while Washington and Jonathan Thompson each added nine.

Brown Deer forced 16 turnovers vs. Brillion and shot 55 percent from the floor. Washington had 15 points and Thompson 12.
