Feb. 16, 2010 1:26 p.m. | Signs prohibiting U-turns will be placed at the following intersections in the village: eastbound and westbound Brown Deer Road at North 64th Street, 60th Street, North Green Bay Road and North Kildeer Court; northbound and southbound Green Bay Road at West Schroeder Drive and North Deerwood Drive; and northbound North Sherman Boulevard at West Bradley Road.
Police Chief Steven Rinzel told the Traffic and Public Safety Committee that U-turns, particularly on Brown Deer Road, have led to increasing numbers of crashes in recent years.
The committee recommended the new signs, which were approved by the Village Board Monday night.

July 26, 2010 4:22 p.m. | The Jewish Community Pantry building was severely damaged by more than four feet of water as a result of last week's storm and is closed for an undetermined period of time. The Pantry is located at 3033 W. Burleigh St., Milwaukee, one of the lowest lying streets in the area.
All contents of the pantry were lost and all services have ceased at this time. The pantry is actively searching for an alternative site in the 53210 zip code or surrounding area. The pantry serves over 1,500 people every month.
The Jewish Community Pantry is part of the Emergency Pantry Network of the Hunger Task Force and co-sponsored by the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center and Women's Division of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. The Pantry has been serving the needs of the community since 1976.
Individuals in need are advised to call "211" (IMPACT) for alternative sites and services.

July 23, 2010 8:26 p.m. | Though a large chunk of the school was still flooded, the Nicolet baseball team kept its eyes on the prize in the rain-delayed WIAA sectional at Cedarburg on Friday, as the Knights used Sam Kohnke's strong pitching and clutch two-run homer to overpower rival Whitefish Bay, 11-1, in a semifinal contest.
With the win, the Knights (25-11) advanced to a WIAA sectional final back at Cedarburg at 11 a.m. Saturday against Grafton (20-9), which took a gamble and won when it did not pitch ace and Milwaukee Brewers' draft choice Conor Fisk in its 4-2 semifinal win over Brown Deer later that day.
That means the Knights will face the 90-mile an hour flamethrower for the first time in 2010. Nicolet has won both previous meetings with Grafton this season, but in neither instance did the Knights have to face Fisk, who has 138 strikeouts against just 23 walks this summer.
"It'll be interesting," said Knight coach Dick Sykes. "We're dead fastball hitters and he's a power pitcher."
Nicolet beat the four-year letterwinner Fisk four straight times in his sophomore and junior years combined.

July 23, 2010 7:11 p.m. | Grafton pitcher Dylan Mayer held Brown Deer hitless over the last four innings in a 4-2 victory over the Falcons Friday afternoon in a WIAA section semifinal baseball game at Cedarburg.
Brown Deer had a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning after getting RBI groundouts from Sean Andryauskas and Joey Matteff.
However, Grafton took the lead for good by scoring three runs in the bottom of the frame. The go-ahead run was knocked in by freshman Alex Nenning.
With the win, Grafton advances to the sectional final against Nicolet at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Brown Deer finishes its season with an 18-16 record, while Grafton is 20-9.

July 23, 2010 4:18 p.m. | Ten municipalities in Milwaukee, Waukesha and Ozaukee counties, in addition to the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, have reported separate sanitary sewer overflows of untreated wastewater to local waterways after Thursday's intense rains, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.
The Milwaukee County communities reporting overflows Thursday include Brown Deer, Fox Point, Milwaukee, Shorewood and Whitefish Bay. Mequon was the only community in Ozaukee County to report an overflow as of Friday.
Waukesha County communities with overflow problems Thursday include Menomonee Falls, Muskego, Brookfield and the Lake Pewaukee Sanitary District, the DNR said in a water systems report Friday.
The metropolitan sewerage district's deep tunnels remained nearly full Friday afternoon so any of the district's regional sanitary sewers with high flows were continuing to spill untreated wastewater into local creeks, rivers and Lake Michigan for a second consecutive evening, district officials said. Combined sanitary and storm sewers in central Milwaukee and eastern Shorewood also were continuing to spill some of their volume as flows remained high Friday.
The mix of sewage and wastewater in the tunnels was being pumped out as quickly as possible and the district's two sewage treatment plants were operating at capacity Friday afternoon, MMSD Executive Director Kevin Shafer said Friday.

July 23, 2010 1:00 p.m. | Residents in the west building of Stratford Village Apartments, 8261 North Teutonia Ave. were evacuated last night after heavy rains flooded through garage. The underground parking garage remains completely underwater at this time.
Village Manager Russell Van Gompel said residents from about 20 units were involved in the evacuation.
Some flooding was reported in various areas of the village, both overland flooding and some sewer backups in basements, he said.
The storm exceeded the capacity of sanitary and storm sewers and village officials are in the process of assessing the damages. If you have damage, send your name, address, phone number and e-mail to manager@browndeerwi.org.

July 23, 2010 10:14 a.m. | Today's sectional baseball games at Cedarburg between Nicolet/Whitefish Bay and Brown Deer/Grafton have been postponed to 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., weather permitting.
The championship game has been pushed back a day and is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday.

July 19, 2010 3:00 p.m. | Brown Deer - To complete a villagewide property revaluation, the village has hired Accurate Appraisals to inspect homes where construction or renovations were done in the past year.
The village expects to mail in mid-August notices to any property owners whose properties will have a change in assessed value, according to a notice from the village.
The village last did a revaluation, using a sales methodology, in 2008 and did a similar revaluation in 2004.

July 15, 2010 3:50 p.m. | River Hills — What happened in April in the woods behind Nicolet High School that led to the assault of a 14-year-old Bayside boy may finally come to light in a trial set for Aug. 6 in Milwaukee County Children's Court.
A 16-year-old River Hills boy, who allegedly dressed like a ninja and struck the victim over the right eye with a machete, has entered a not guilty plea to the charge.
The Bayside boy, along with three friends, entered the woods after school on April 27. The boys were looking for a person dressed like a ninja after hearing that two high school girls had been confronted by a boy the previous day. The Bayside boy, who was separated briefly from his companions, was assaulted by the River Hills boy, police say.
Because the case is in juvenile court, police reports and witness statements have not been made public, and what little is known about the has come out in pretrial hearings, mainly from statements made by the father of the suspect. The father said his son had a job clearing brush on a neighbor's property and was working there when the incident took place.
River Hills police recovered a machete, a bow and sword from the suspect's home at the time of his arrest.

July 15, 2010 1:26 p.m. | Milwaukee, Mequon, Wauwatosa, Cudahy, Shorewood, Brown Deer, Fox Point and Elm Grove - in addition to the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District - reported sanitary sewer overflows to local waterways Thursday morning after overnight thunderstorms poured up to 5 inches of rain on the metropolitan area, a state environmental official said.
Sanitary sewer overflows generally prevent sewage backups into basements and reduce property damage, MMSD officials said.
Even so, overflows of separate sanitary sewers are prohibited by the federal Clean Water Act, said James Fratrick, watershed specialist with the Department of Natural Resources in Milwaukee.
But the DNR is not likely to take enforcement actions against MMSD and the eight municipalities, Fratrick said. The primary reason is that MMSD is under a court-ordered stipulation to complete an estimated $1 billion in sewer and treatment plant improvements by the end of this year, he said. The goal of making those improvements is to reduce the incidents of sanitary sewer overflows.
Communities served by the district are under a separate court order to decrease leaks of storm water into their sanitary sewers.

July 13, 2010 9:22 p.m. | "That's what I like, a one-inning win."
Those were the comments of Brown Deer senior pitcher Joey Mattefs in the school parking lot after the Falcons got a two-out RBI single from Danny Korpela in the bottom of the eighth to beat Wauwatosa West, 8-7, in the completion of a suspended game Tuesday night.
The victory came just minutes after Brown Deer lost a frustrating 3-2 regularly scheduled decision to Cudahy. The split left the Falcons with a final record of 12-12 in Woodland Conference play and 15-14 overall while Cudahy guarenteed itself no worse than a share of the Woodland Blue Division title at 17-5 (22-13 overall).
Mattefs pitched a scoreless top of the eighth inning in the suspended game, which had been postponed by storms last month. Mattefs started the frame with one out, and gave up a walk to Alex Rehl and an infield single to Tyler Gross.
But then he made a nice snare off a high one-hopper off the bat of Sean Aiken, whirling and starting a crisp inning-ending 1-6-3 doubleplay with shortstop Chris Smith making the neat pivot at second base.

July 13, 2010 11:50 a.m. | Larry's Market will have indoor seating for its deli customers pending approval Monday night of a development agreement. Larry's, 8737 N. Deerwood Drive, has outdoor seating available during the warmer months but none during cold weather.
The development agreement, which also requires the paving of the market's parking lot, will permit seating indoors for 20 to 30 people.
