Jan. 22, 2010 10:50 a.m. | Brown Deer police are using video surveillance tapes to help identify a suspect who robbed Cousins Subs, 5191 W. Brown Deer Road, Thursday night.
According to police: A white male entered the business at 7:17 p.m. and handed an employee a note asking for money. The employee gave him cash and he left the store on foot.
Lt. Peter Nimmer said police are working with other departments who have had similar incidents in their communities.

March 05, 2010 10:14 a.m. | Whitefish Bay — Brown Deer boys basketball coach Andy Bauschelt said he told his players before the game that Whitefish Bay's Jamie Schneck and John Johnston were the two to stop in order to advance.
That's easier said than done.
The potent post-guard duo combined to score 36 points (23 in the second half) as the Blue Dukes escaped another close call at home, winning 51-48 in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal Thursday.
"Whitefish Bay is a great team," Bauschelt said. "They don't turn the ball over. They don't beat themselves.
"That was kind of our game plan all around. They're not going to beat themselves so we can't beat ourselves, and we have to take every possession for what it's worth. I thought we did that for about two and a half quarters, and then for a quarter and a half we were kind of loose cannons out there, throwing the ball away and having them get three, four cracks at a bucket and that was pretty much the game."

March 03, 2010 9:38 p.m. | For the 0-21 Shorewood girls basketball team, good moments have been few and far between this winter.
But the Greyhounds have improved.
Just listen to Brown Deer coach Mark Busalacchi after his Falcons didn't put Shorewood down until a 28-6 fourth quarter outburst led to a 73-38 victory Wednesday night.
"Oh they're so much better than they were the first time we played," he said. "They didn't get a basket in the first half that time. They deserved to be in this game, because they played harder and better than we did for about three quarters. We got away with just our athleticism for awhile."
The win improved Brown Deer to 8-14 as the Falcons closed their regular season. The two teams will meet at Brown Deer next Tuesday in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal.

March 02, 2010 10:12 a.m. | Terri Lynn's on Bradley plans to open Friday night after business owner Terri Lynn Wigley last night received entertainment licenses for a jukebox and the large banquet hall at the former Bradley's Jazz Club, 4740 W. Bradley Road.
The Village Board reviewed her operating and business plans, which call for the supper club to be open Tuesdays through Sundays with a different theme each night.
Wigley has operated a catering business for the last 20 years and currently prepares school lunches for about 950 students at the Bradley Road site. The lunches are delivered to the schools.

March 02, 2010 10:06 a.m. | University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee officials will introduce plans tonight for its proposed Innovation Park, which will include an engineering and applied sciences campus, on the County Grounds off Watertown Plank Road in Wauwatosa.
The plans will be presented to the Wauwatosa Common Council during a Committee of the Whole meeting at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 7725 W. North Ave. The public is welcome to attend the meeting to learn about the proposed project, but there will be no opportunity for comments or questions during the meeting.
Residents who would like to speak to UWM officials can arrive at 6 p.m. and ask questions prior to the meeting.
The next opportunity for public input will occur during the Plan Commission meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at City Hall.

Feb. 19, 2010 6:14 p.m. | A former girls' junior varsity soccer coach at Brown Deer High School was charged Friday with sexually assaulting a member of the team she coached, according to a criminal complaint.
Emily Louise Patterson, 26, who is a teacher at Mukwonago High School, was charged with one count of sexual assault of a student by school staff in connection with an incident that allegedly involved a 16-year-old student.
According to the complaint, Patterson and the girl became friends during the 2008-2009 girls soccer season and became physically involved in January of this year.
Patterson is charged with one incident that allegedly occurred when she spent the night at the girl's house.
According to the complaint, the incident involved Patterson and the girl groping and touching each other outside their clothing.

Feb. 19, 2010 4:14 p.m. | A former assistant soccer coach at Brown Deer High School was charged today with sexual assault after being accused of having a sexual relationship with a player.
Emily L. Patterson, 26, of Milwaukee, is charged with one count of sexual assault of child by a school staff person or a person who works with children.
Patterson was employed at Brown Deer High School as an assistant coach for the girls soccer team during the 2008-09 school year. Police say the assault occurred at the victim's residence. Court records said it happened on Jan. 1 of this year.
Patterson has not been employed by the Brown Deer district since 2008-09. She is now a teacher at Mukwonago High School.
Superintendent of Schools Deb Kerr issued the following statement: "Our administrative and counseling personnel have been available throughout this situation to all students and parents with concerns. The safety and welfare of our students is always the district's highest priority."

Feb. 16, 2010 3:51 p.m. | Tickets are now sale at for the WIAA boys basketball "Super Sectionals" to be played at Marquette University's Al McGuire Center at 12th and Wells Streets in Milwaukee, March 11-13.
This is the fourth consecutive year that Germantown will be co-hosting the event.
Teams from three sectionals will determine state tournament berths at the events. From division I sectional eight, area teams that could be involved include Nicolet, Oak Creek, South Milwaukee and Wauwatosa East and West.
From division I sectional five, potential sectional participants include Germantown, Homestead, and Menomonee Falls.
In addition, the division 2 sectional final will be held at the McGuire Center at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, March 13. This loaded event features many of the state's top-ranked teams including New Berlin Eisenhower, Port Washington, defending state D2 champ Wisconsin Lutheran and Catholic Memorial, along with Brown Deer, Shorewood, Whitefish Bay and New Berlin West.

Feb. 16, 2010 1:26 p.m. | Signs prohibiting U-turns will be placed at the following intersections in the village: eastbound and westbound Brown Deer Road at North 64th Street, 60th Street, North Green Bay Road and North Kildeer Court; northbound and southbound Green Bay Road at West Schroeder Drive and North Deerwood Drive; and northbound North Sherman Boulevard at West Bradley Road.
Police Chief Steven Rinzel told the Traffic and Public Safety Committee that U-turns, particularly on Brown Deer Road, have led to increasing numbers of crashes in recent years.
The committee recommended the new signs, which were approved by the Village Board Monday night.

Feb. 16, 2010 1:04 p.m. | The village plans to issue general obligation bonds for an amount not to excess $5,460,000 to fund its capital improvement program. The issue would include up to $4 million for public projects in Tax Incremental District 4, the Original Village. The amount will cover street repair, streetscapes, sidewalks and possibly new water main, now in the budget for $700,000. If the water commission decides on repairs instead of replacement, the financing requirement will be reduced.
The bonds would also finance the village's share of a new section of bike path, street improvement projects, a new heating and air conditioning system for the library and repair of the roof on the Department of Public Works building.
The board adopted a resolution approving the sale of the bonds Monday.

Feb. 16, 2010 12:48 p.m. | The Village Board approved a three-year extension for the permit for the modular classrooms at Dean Elementary School. Although the School District initially hoped it would be able to build new classrooms during its first three-year lease, the downturn in the economy dashed plans to go to referendum for funding.

Feb. 16, 2010 10:26 a.m. | A new business, Terri Lynn's on Bradley, will replace the troubled Bradley's Jazz Club at 4740 W. Bradley Road. Theresa Wigley, who has been leasing half of the building for her catering business, will rent the entire building and operate a supper club in addition to her catering business.
The Village Board approved the transfer of the liquor license from Lewis Anyanwu, one of the partners who owns the building and the holder of the license.
Wigley, who has catered lunches for several schools for up to 15 years, hopes to open the supper club within a week.
