Yes, it is possible to be informed in the United States. Yes, it is possible to find objective journalism in the U.S. No, no place is perfect in reporting the news. However regularly following these news sources will get you much closer to the truth than following MSNBC, FOX, Moveon, Limbaugh, or other news outlets that only slant the news and do not report it objectively ...or even make an attempt to do so. A partial list I suggest...
The British Broadcasting Co. is still the gold standard in international news. BBC.co.uk/
Sunlight Foundation.org - A non-partisan, non-profit place to find refreshing openness about events and people who influence the news. They recently revealed the secret meetings that Obama had with the pharmaceutical industry, its CEOs, its lobbyists, etc. after he promised to eliminate lobbying in Washington.
NPR.org National Public Radio, with limited resources, presents a fair assessment of news and events.
PBS.org - Public TV network is still too beholden to its major support groups, but does as fair a presentation of the news as can be found in the U.S. on network TV.
mediamonitors.net
alternet.org
commondreams.org
oppapers.com - has access to many research papers, essays, and theses on a variety of subjects.
CBC - The Canadians have a much better record of objective news reporting than most of U.S. news.
Of course there are many other sources that I could suggest. But if you relied on the above resources in your search for objectivity in news reporting you would be far better infomred than 99% of Americans.

Kudos to you for that difficult task. Thanks for a couple of the media sources you list in this blog that I was totally unaware of and will seek them out.

We'd all be better off with no news rather than the propaganda sources Jester recommends above.
Listen and believe at your peril.

Were the BBC, NPR, PBS, etc. all slanted when they reported accurately on Bush, Reagan, Nixon, et al? Or are they only slanted when it comes to an African American in the White House?

If you believe NPR, BBC, CBC, etc. are unreliable news outlets, one has to wonder if you have any objective rationality at all. You actually have admitted to listening to the convicted smuggler and criminal Rush Limbaugh to get your news. That says it all.

C'mon, let's get real. All one has to do is read what Gordy-Forgotten Man, and the rest of the right-wing goofs have to write here. Not only are they ridiculous in their comments, not only do they have absolutely no clue what objective journalism is, but they never have anything to write that is pertinent to this specific blog.
It is difficult to believe that people like this exist in a so-called civilized society. Rush Limbaugh? Glenn Beck? The Washington Times? Those sources are the lowest of the low, and do not even merit the term jounralism reflected in any evaluation of their anti-intellectual garbage. Gee, let's see, who to believe, Rush Limbaugh or the BBC??? Huh?

Good quote, Gordy, from Ronald Reagan. If anybody knew about loose women, it was ole Ronnie. He bedded enough of them, inside and outside of marriage. Please, give us more, Gordy, from the expert on the oldest profession. Good ole Ronnie.

You will find that he stayed at one of the hotels well known to be frequented by loose women. Ronnie told of waking up one morning and not recognizing the woman he had slept with that night. Yep, that is where Ronnie called home and there were lots more women to take to bed each night. Got anymore good quotes from Ronnie and loose women, Gordy? There are tons of references to Ronnie and loose women on the search engines.

What ever happened to the old liberal saying, "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it"?
I listen to the BBC World Service nightly and constantly hear their man made climate change reports presented as fact. What other conclusion can I draw from a delusional news outlet that reports myth as truth when overwelming counter evidence has come forth over the last two months?

Your mention of the Economist is helpful. As you check into Ronald Reagan's sleazy, immoral past, you might check who was the owner of the hotel he stayed at when he was having all these "beddings" with married and unmarried women...it will surprise you! The owner was a Lesbian who was very, very close to Ronnie later in life. What scum Reagan was.
Forg. Man-Gordy: overwhelming evidence questioning climate change? What!?! Yes, there was some exaggerated material at East Anglia Univ. and elsewhere, but the OVERWHELMING [as in 95%] of evidence by people who know holds steady. Only an uneducated, head in the sand, right-wing nutcase would state something like "overwhelming" when it is only a few fundamentalist people who think the world was created in 6 days, and Noah & family survived as the only humans after the flood. C'mon, must we put up with all this mythology and voodoo from right-wing goofs?

I just found that funny, since the lack of objective journalism is primarily focused around a political bias.
Kathy Wanger - Feb 23, 2010 2:01 PM
The same is true with police, military, etc. which, it is hoped, would be unbiased...and supported with tax money. Our tax money is best used when it does things for all of us that we cannot do for ourselves individually. I cannot own a TV station, but my government can. I can't police the city, but my government can. I can't organize and finance an army, but my government can.
