Those who parade their self-pious, intolerant, bigoted behavior bother me most. It matters little whether they are Christian, Moslem, Jew, Buddhist, Taoist, Shinto, "spiritual," or whatever. These strutting judgmentalists give no evidence of their tie to any religious leader who was ethical, moral, tolerant, loving, etc. They are simply people-haters, and they single out one or two groups to hate and judge and lambast.
We sometimes label these people as evangelicals, pentecostals, fundamentalists, etc. But sometimes they are simply following their twisted belief in their form of Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, or some branch of Sunni, Shia, Sufi, or whatever. Using an old Bible reference, "you could meet them on the streets of Jerusalem..." Jesus taught tolerance in his story of the Samaritan. Mohammed is quoted as speaking in support of people who were considered outcasts or deviants. Buddha's entire life was one of inclusion, not exclusion. But the fundamentalist seems to know more, know better, and know how to judge and condemn.
Currently in the United States there seems to be a growing tolerance for gays, same-sex marriages, etc. This is disgusting to many of these extreme right-wing, judgmental, fundamentalists. Major groups of the evangelicals have determined that they have lost the war here and have turned their focus to Africa and elsewhere to fight their holier-than-thou battle.
Uganda is a special case in point. The evangelicals are arriving in large numbers. They do not come with missionary schools or hospitals or health care. They come simply to convert people to "their side." They tell the needy Ugandan people that their trials and tribulations are caused by their "sickness." And the evangelicals tell them they are bringing the righteous "cure" that will make them well.
This is a disgusting state of affairs. Self-righteous evangelicals are making a mockery of missionary zeal, a sewer of social service, and a hell of the needs of needy people. These fundamentalists are liars. And they bring not schools or hospitals or vaccinations, but they bring a pig-in-a-poke. Disgusting.
I hope that you will witness for morality, ethics, tolerance, and biblical truth when you are confronted by these evangelical, pompous, selfish people. The world has enough problems without having to fight to overcome preachers of lies, distortions, greed, self-righteousness, historical inaccuracies, deception, and pompous ignorance.
