Crazy? Immature? Irresponsible? Irrational? Selfish? Aping? Ignorant? Unenlightened? Terrorism?
All those words apply to varying degrees to the threatened shutdown of the nation by a minority of right-wingers in the U.S. Congress. Here is one of the real dangers ahead with this shutdown: An Economic Recession for the U.S. No doubt about it. The last recession was caused by the selfish and reckless actions of the George W. Bush administration. Illegal invasion of Iraq, corporate hand-outs of scores of billions of dollars in Iraq and Afghanistan with little or no accountability, multi-billion-dollar government work being done or not and without contracts, etc. We are now on the road to an even bigger economic disaster.
The Tea Party has taken control of the Republican Party. Even that development is irrational. The Tea Party represents a minority of the elected Republican congress persons. These politicians, who represent the right-wing fringe, are beholden to a small group of selfish and greedy, wealthy, spoiled brats. They do not view the U.S. Constitution as a guideline. They view the directives of people like the Koch Brothers as their gospel.
They have painted themselves into a corner, with no alternative way out. So they hold fast. They sulk. They threaten. They lie. They distort. And in the process they make the Republican Party a terrorist organization.
The growing problems related to the shutdown are taking their toll. If the Republican elected officials lose more credibility and are no longer willing to goose-step to the right-wing fringe, then some sort of face-saving "compromise" will happen. A crumb will be tossed to them, and they will have something to exaggerate as a "win." But some will pay a price. The money from the wealthy, extreme right will be used to defeat them in the next election cycle. The Koch Brothers and their ilk are not loyal Americans, and they lust for more power and money. For them, it is all or nothing.
Through it all, historians and people who know and understand the history of America are flabbergasted that this sort of selfishness infects one of the major political parties in the U.S. It is a cancer that cares little about what may happen to the average American. Greed knows no bounds, and cares not about the majority of Americans. To defeat and belittle Barack Obama is a major goal. Obama represents the opposite part of the arc of the political scale. And Obama has altruism and the common good on his side. It is now the time when we shall see what democracy counts for in the United States of America.
